Hardware Design

Our hardware design expertise allows us to undertake projects which include custom-designed circuit boards or assemblies, equipment wiring, control panels and more. We are able to undertake any kind of project: from simple one-off prototypes or custom assemblies through to full-scale production runs. A more detailed summary of our experience is as follows:

  • Microcontroller circuits: we have designed many microcontroller-based circuits to perform specific functions, both as standalone circuits and as part of larger systems. We are comfortable designing circuits to interface with a variety of other devices, achieving the best design for the available budget
  • FPGA design: we have experience in designing FPGA-based circuits from the ground up, including device selection, pin specification, power supply design and device programming. Our FPGA projects have typically been used to replicate functionality in obsolete silicon devices, or to offload time-consuming protocol processing from the host processor
  • LED dimmer circuits: we have designed several LED dimmer circuits, incorporating both constant voltage and constant current LED drivers. We have been able to offer a variety of different control options, from DMX and ArtNet to a simple shaft encoder interface
  • Beaglebone Black and Raspberry Pi expansion boards: we are familiar with the Beaglebone, Beaglebone Black and Raspberry Pi platforms, and have designed several bespoke expansion boards for these platforms. We are also able to offer Linux development services, both in terms of user applications and kernel-level device drivers
  • Schematic capture and PCB layout: we use Altium Designer for our circuit design work, and are able to design circuit elements or complete boards from scratch. PCB layouts are often constrained by size and cost, and we will make appropriate component and manufacturing choices to ensure that the board can be manufactured within budget
  • Component specification: we work with our suppliers and manufacturing partners to ensure that the correct board-level components are chosen to ensure that a board can be delivered on time
  • Liaison with board manufacturers: we have a good working relationship with several manufacturing partners, who are able to manufacture both prototype boards and larger production runs. This working relationship allows us to quickly resolve any problems that might arise during the production process. Our partners are also able to offer a component procurement service, allowing them to purchase components at a significant saving when compared to list prices
  • Control panels: we are able to design and manufacture bespoke control panels for a variety of systems, if necessary incorporating logic, additional circuits and interfaces to Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs). We are able to use in-house facilities to label panels to customer specifications
  • System wiring: we are able to specify and undertake low-voltage and mains wiring within a larger structure, primarily to connect components that we have designed or specified
